Film,
also called as cinema or movie, is one of the best creations by mankind. A
movie’s story can be of any type. It can be educational, entertaining,
religious, or a person’s biography etc. A movie is the perfect media for
creating awareness of anything in public. A film’s duration can be of any
length. There will be short films and long movies. Short films are usually not
distributed and don’t require much investment and time. But for
making a 2 hour movie to show it on silver screen, lot of time, money investment
and dedication is required. For making such films, there is something called
Film Industry.
Film
industry is one of the biggest entertainment industries. It became very
successful in entertaining audience, only because of the huge efforts put in by
the team for making a film. Film making is both an art and an industry. It is a
very huge task and a really challenging one. The process of film making
involves various stages.
The key
persons in making a film are producer and director. Producer takes care of all
the financial matters and so he fixes remuneration for each and every person on
the team including director. Director, as the name suggests, he directs the
film and handles technical part of the film. Technical team comprises of 24
departments, called as 24 crafts in film industry. First of all, producer
selects a story. It can be from a book, true story, comic book, graphic novel
or an original idea. He also checks on the returns for his investment on the
movie. Once the selection is done, he looks for a director. The ultimate
outcome from a director is to show a decent screenplay to the audience. At this
level, the dialogue writer and story writer prepares a dialog script for the
film.
Next
stage of film making is the director and the producer start selecting the crew
for the film. This crew comprises of artists, Cameraman, Music Director, choreographer,
Fight master, Art director, Costumer, Makeup man and Hair dresser for the
artists, Production Manager, Production Chief, Editor, Still Photographer,
Publicity designer etc., and finally director selects assistant director,
co-director and associate director.
Once
the dialog script is prepared, they look for locations which are suitable for
the situation in the script. Now, cameraman forms his team and gets his
equipment for shooting. After this, producer enters an agreement with outdoor
and camera equipment unit office for supply of required items at shooting spot.
They include different types of camera, lenses, track and trolley, crane, generator
and lights. Likewise other teams of technicians will fix their sub ordinates
and materials required for shooting. Producer provides food, accommodation,
transport and all the required things to entire team in the shooting every day.
There will be 100-125 persons working at the shooting spot. Shooting starts
once the schedule is fixed, which is planned with the available dates of
artists. After shooting is done, editor combines all the scenes and the dubbing
and sound effects are given to the edited film. Once all this is done, the film
is distributed, i.e., it is made available for viewing by an audience. This is
the brief explanation of film making.
Time
Management plays a key role in making a movie. In film industry, “Time is
Money”. For example, if an artist comes late or if there’s no power in the
set or if there are some issues between the team members, shooting will get
delayed and money invested on set for that time will be wasted. So, finishing
shooting on time is very important.
